Kids Can Publish is Better than Ever
Learn about our relaunch & how to get listed!
Dec 17, 2010

For the past few years, we have encouraged students to submit their writing to websites that offer student publishing opportunities and contests when we give classroom workshops, and now we have started to advertise other publishing opportunities and contests for youths on the Kids Can Publish website so there is even MORE opportunity for kids to receive recognition -- and in many cases prizes!

Like other publishing organization, Kids Can Publish wants to imbue students with a love for writing, reward those who do write and encourage students to continuously improve their writing skills, so we reworked our website to include information about as many legitimate writing opportunities and contests for students that we possibly can. The more we can interest youths in being published or winning contests, the more they will want to write, and the better will be their self-esteem.

If you would like us to mention your organization's opportunities for students at our Kids Can Publish Workshops and Teens Can Publish Workshops, and add information about them on our re-launched Kids Can Publish website, just drop us a line via email with your contact info, and complete details on your writing/publishing or contest opportunities. AND, we would be happy to display your logo next to your web link on the website if you send it with your reply.

For more information on Kids Can Publish, peruse this website a bit.

Thanks so much!

Finalists of Purple Dragonfly Book Awards Announced

CHANDLER, AZ– Judging for the first annual Purple Dragonfly Book Awards contest, which recognizes excellence in children's literature, has concluded, and a list of finalists revealed. The finalists will learn the details of which category they placed in and whether they will receive first, second or third place, or an honorable mention at or after the Arizona Authors Association Awards Banquet, which begins at 5 p.m. on Sat. Nov. 6, 2010. The event is held at the Glendale Civic Center at 5750 W. Glenn Drive in Glendale, Ariz.

One exceptional entry will win the $300 Grand Prize, while all first place entries receive $75 each.

“Winning any place in the Purple Dragonfly Contest is a huge honor because in order to maintain the integrity of the Dragonfly Book Awards, a minimum score of 55 out of 80 must be earned for a place to be awarded to the entrant – even if it is the sole entry in a category,” explains Linda Radke, president of Five Star Publications, the sponsor of the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards. “Competition is steep, too, because there is no publication date limit as long as the book is still in print.”

The list of finalists include: God’s Promise by Maureen Moss of Ashland, OR; Chippy Chipmunk Parties in the Garden by Kathy M. Miller of New Ringgold, PA; Ramdas: The One-Eyed Turtle by Robert Goerman & Dinesh Patel of New Kensington, PA; Little Rockin’ Roger and the Magic Glass Guitar by Benjamin Moores of Manchester, England; Travels with Gannon and Wyatt: Botswana by Patti Wheeler & Keith Hemstreet of Rochester Hills, MI; Danny the Dragon by Tina Turbin of Dunedin, FL; Hey Dad! Let’s Have a Catch by Harold Theurer, Jr., Brooklyn, NY; Where Do We Go? By James F. Weinsier of Fernandina Beach, FL; Princess Sally and Prince Tommy in the Kingdom Always by Jennifer L. Gray, Ph.D. of Federal Way, WA; Roonie B. Mooney: Lost and Alone by Janan Cain of Riverside, IL; Hip Hip Hooray, It’s Monsoon Day! By Roni Capin Rivera-Ashford of Tucson, AZ; Living on Sisu: The 1913 Union Copper Strike Tragedy by Deborah K. Frontiera of Houston, TX; Morning Rain by Sheila Cayolle of Slpharetta, GA; Your Preteen Apostolate by Nicholas J. Bottesi and Michele E. Bondi of Rochester Hills, MI. Several of the finalists placed in multiple categories.

The second annual Purple Dragonfly Book Awards contest is already underway. Submissions postmarked March 1, 2011 or earlier are eligible for the Early Bird reward: a free e-copy of The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing or Promote Like a Pro: Small Budget, Big Show. Final deadline for submissions is May 1, 2011. The Royal Dragonfly Book Awards Contest has also launched with Submissions postmarked December 1, 2010 or earlier eligible for the Early Bird reward and the final deadline for submissions on February 1, 2011. For complete rules and submission forms, visit www.FiveStarBookAwards.com.

Leads From Linda - The Art of Googling

The following is provided by Linda F. Radke of Five Star Publications. Please visit her sites (listed below the article). She has many great services for authors as well as wonderful books published through her company for the eager reader.

I did a Google search for "Arizona Library Lists" and discovered a list of free online resources. You can always buy a list or you can let your fingers do the walking through Google and find your way to free resources. You do not need to stop with a list of Arizona libraries - do your own searches and cover the country.

Are you trying to market your book(s) to librarians in Arizona? This link will take you to a list of Arizona libraries. The list includes government and public libraries. Visit each library listing and find the contact area. Pitch your book and your availability to give a library talk.

http://www.librarysites.info/states/az.htm

This list might be a little easier to use. Please note that not all links are active, but addresses and phone numbers are provided.

http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Default.aspx?tabid=348

Arizona Library Association offers a list of libraries on their site.

http://www.azla.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=131

I recommended mailing a flyer or postcard. Or you might want to consider a flyer with a handful of bookmarks. Often times librarians will give away bookmarks.

Do you feel overwhelmed by these lists? Don't feel that you need to conquer your mailing in one day. Commit yourself to pitching five libraries a day.

Happy Marketing,

~Linda

AuthorsandExperts

AuthorsandExperts.com invites you to submit industry-related, royalty-free articles to the A&E Star Tracks newsletter in exchange for the opportunity to have your work read by the 30,000 potential clients on average who visit AuthorsandExperts.com monthly and A&E professional presenters, published writers and media members who will receive Star Tracks quarterly beginning in July.

Star Tracks publishes essays and articles written on subjects designed to assist authors and speakers in their professions and share their expertise on marketing, writing, lecturing, selling, social media, sales, publishing, touring, business practices and a myriad of other subjects helpful to writers and orators. To help those who submit articles glean some free PR for their efforts, submissions may include a personalized byline, e-mail address, phone number and website link; however, articles may not be blatant sales pitches for services or products. In addition, keeping the articles royalty-free allows members of the media and social bloggers to reprint Star Tracks articles, thus increasing the contributors' exposure exponentially!

In addition to industry-directed articles, Star Tracks also contains qualified leads for authors and experts, information on catalog listings, cooperative advertising opportunities and other helpful data and ideas.

The deadline for the July 1 Star Tracks is June 28. The July issue is a very special one, in that it is A&E's target date for activating A&E members' free online blogs on their member profile pages. As a member, you will be sent more info on the free blogs very soon. Contributed articles are printed on a space-available and content-relative basis. Although not all contributions will be published; all good submissions will be held in reserve for future issues if there is not room in the current issue to publish them. To view past issues of Star Tracks, visit www.AuthorsandExperts.com. We welcome articles up to 1500 words. To be placed on an A&E Star Tracks deadline reminder list, e-mail info@AuthorsandExperts.com or call 480-940-8182.

Leads From Linda - Off to the Big Screen!

FIVE STAR PUBLICATIONS ANNOUNCES GROUNDBREAKING NEW DIVISION:

FIVE STAR SCRIPTS LAUNCHED TO TAKE AUTHORS FROM

THE BOOKSHELF TO THE BIG SCREEN

(CHANDLER, AZ)—It takes more than a great book to make a great movie—authors need industry connections and scriptwriting know-how that often take years to develop. Recognizing this gap, Five Star Publications is pleased to announce a groundbreaking new division with “reel possibilities,” Five Star Scripts. With 25 years of publishing and marketing experience under her belt, Five Star President Linda F. Radke has joined forces with former actor and award-winning author and screenwriter Lisa Cerasoli to provide Hollywood hopefuls with an insiders’ edge.

“I’ve always encouraged my clients to reach for the stars,” said Radke, “And now we’re helping them aim higher. With the unique services available through Five Star Scripts, authors have access to new resources to help them take their work from the bookshelf to the big screen, and we’re thrilled to be part of the process.”

Their team is not only comprised of noted scriptwriters like Jim Byrnes and Robert Potter, but Radke and Cerasoli will also utilize the expertise of Sandra Siegal, of Siegal Entertainment, Inc. Siegal also owns a management company based in Beverly Hills, CA, and works as a producer and producing consultant. She has over 20 years involvement in both film and television.

Herself, a 15-year industry veteran, Cerasoli’s credits include starring roles as “V” on General Hospital, Zoe in The Pretender and many more. Her second book is due out in April 2010.

"Our mission with Five Star Scripts is to create a vehicle for authors to join the ever expanding world of entertainment,” said Cerasoli. “In partnership with each author, our team will determine if a manuscript has movie or pilot potential. And then we’ll get to work at making that dream a reality.”

Launched in January 2010, Five Star Scripts offers the following services:
  • Evaluation of unpublished manuscripts for script/screenplay potential
  • Evaluation of published titles for script/screenplay potential
  • Script/screenplay writing and rewriting services
  • Editing services
  • Full production services in transitioning scripts and screenplays into books including writing and editing, graphic design, layout, packaging and promotion
  • Industry services based out of Los Angeles: coverage, consulting, pitching, promotion and producing
Both Radke and Cerasoli are available for interview, and website development is underway at http://www.fivestarscripts.com/. For more information, please contact Five Star Publications at (480) 940-8182

We took our family skiing this past weekend in charming, snow-covered Greer, AZ. I stayed in the cabin by the cozy fireplace and read a new manuscript while my family skied. I kept the fire going as I read my way through "Perfectly Amanda." I was the envy of every Amanda Blake fan. After all, I was getting the first glimpse of her remarkable life story. (www.PerfectlyAmanda.com). If you were not an Amada Blake fan before you read "Perfectly Amanda," you will be after it.

Greer also has a quaint library that was located across the street from our rented cabin. I am going to donate a few books to Greer Memorial Library and you might want to do the same. Tell the librarian that Linda Radke of Five Star Publications sent ya. I told her I would. :-)
