Catastrophes can hit at a moment’s notice, with devastating outcomes on people, infrastructures, acquisitions, and world economies. Todd Knight's The Posh Prepper: An Apocalyptic Survival Thriller is a novel that questions emergency preparedness against natural, biological, and technological disasters, at both personal and national levels.

The read starts by introducing Nick Ritter, a top crisis consultant from Thorne Global. Nick is "The Posh Prepper," the best in the business of designing survival plans for ultra-high-net-worth clients, on everything from wildfire to world war. He intensely believes that the cost of being prepared is nothing compared to the expenses incurred when caught without an emergency plan. Despite his mastery and expertise in his career, Nick had found himself in traumatizing positions in the past that put to the ultimate test his prowess and survival skills. Readers will encounter his horrific experience in Africa, where he had gotten trapped in a collapsed mine. His call to the company managers prior to the mine collapse to stay prepared for such forms of crisis through "emergency conditional" or "battle-proofing" strategies had fallen on deaf ears. Management seemed to be a disinterested group, who unbelievably didn't hesitate to recruit youngsters to work in the partially lit tunnels within the mine, among them a blind girl, and a breastfeeding mother.

Nick Ritter is a professional who would often boast about being a step ahead of everything that could ever go wrong. He would use this notion to lure high-end clients by having them believe that he could come up with seamless escape plans that were quick, safe, and comfortable, for people of all ages. Little did he know that later on in 2035, he would need to activate his own escape plan after getting wind of a terrible viral outbreak in the United States. This would certainly have him hasten his retirement plan to head to his ranch in New Zealand, despite being at the prime of his career. As the news reported, in just twenty-four hours, there were already a hundred and fifty airport employees sick, thirty of them in critical condition. Nick had thus been forced to start his getaway procedure immediately, but what he didn't know was that his company's CEO, TJ Chandra, would insert himself into Nick's escape plan. After overhearing Nick's phone call with his brother Paul regarding the deadly virus outbreak, TJ insisted he be included in the escape plan at any cost. But still there were hurdles to overcome...the pilot who had been hired for the get-away flight would also insist that his family be included in the escape plan. Despite his unwillingness to bring along other people, Nick would find himself pushed to the limit and wondering how he was supposed to hold everyone’s hand.

This is a book that readers will find enjoyable due to its suspense and the excitement of seeing how its characters react to catastrophes when under pressure. It will be praised for raising pensive questions about what readers would do in the same situation. While the book is fiction, it feels all too real, making it an essential read for our times.
