New England Reader Project Due Next Summer

Reprinted with permission of Publisher's Weekly

Delphinium/HarperCollins is continuing its ambitious project to do a bookseller/librarian version ofState by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America (Ecco), edited by Matt Weiland and Sean Wilsey, itself inspired by the WPA Guides of the 1930s, with a call for submissions for The New England Reader, due out in summer 2011. It will include essays on New York, as well as Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

The brain child of Carl Lennertz, v-p for independent retailing at HarperCollins, who also serves as editor for the series, the bookseller/librarian regional readers are sold exclusively through independent bookstores, and Harper is donating $1 from the sale of each book to the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression. There will be nine paperback original readers altogether, with one or two essays on each state in the region by booksellers and/or librarians, and a listing of independent bookstores in the area. The first two have already been released: The Great Lakes Reader (Oct. 2009) and The Pacific Northwest Reader (May 2010).

For more information and to submit essays to The New England Reader, contact Lennertz at: carl@harpercollins.com.
