Borders Files for Bankruptcy

It's official - Borders has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  The news is all over the net.  Does this mean the beginning of the end of mega-bookstores?  Barnes&Noble is rumored to be in trouble too.  Will this help the Mom&Pop small bookstores?  Or are they all destined to go away in favor of Amazon and other online sites?  Personally, there's something about spending an hour or so browsing in a bookstore that you just can't get from Amazon.  Anyway, here's one of many articles on Border's problems, this one from The NYTimes.

  1. I will miss stopping off at Borders. This is such tragic news. Makes me wonder what's left for new writers. Will hardcovers become a thing of the past? Will books soon be vintage articles? It *okay* reading books on line, but there's something more real about holding a book in your hand, and there's nothing like a bookshelf loaded with favourite books. They become part of our personal history, and they deserve to be displayed.
Saw you on Book Blogs, and I'm happily following you. Please check out my almost new blog, www.moanabrantwood.blogspot.com - it's a little esoteric and I hope, a little interesting.

  3. The Borders online store closed on September 27, 2011, at 10:30 pm Eastern/9:30 pm Central. A banner then appeared on their website allowing users to browse, but directed them to Barnes & Noble to complete their purchases. All Borders customers had until October 29, 2011, to prevent their personal contact and purchase information from being transferred to Barnes & Noble. On October 1, 2011, Borders cardholders were informed by email: "As part of Borders ceasing operations, we Barnes & Noble acquired some of its assets including Borders brand trademarks and their customer list." The federal bankruptcy court approved this sale on September 26, 2011
