Oh my goodness! Is it true? Is there really an alligator in the classroom? I don't think a second grade classroom is a good place for a gator. Do you?

There are all sorts of animals that make very good classroom pets, but there are others that simply are a bad idea. This is the story of one such classroom, all the pets that live there, and of the new pet that arrived one day. Told by Sue the gerbil, who prefers to be called Snoozer because, well, you know, she likes to sleep A LOT, and "translated from gerbilish to English" by author Conrad J. Storad, this is a silly, sweet, and fun story of just what makes a good classroom pet.

Snoozer begins by introducing the reader to all the animals that live in Mrs. Nichols' classroom. There's Lola the red knee tarantula, two white mice, a tank full of goldfish and oh yes, let's not forget about Nat the cat who visits the school and likes to peek through the windows at Snoozer and the other animals. All was well with the animals, and the students learned a lot about various creatures by watching/studying them. What could be better? But then one day Benny and Jacob came to school with a little surprise - a baby alligator! Some of the other kids thought the baby alligator was the absolute coolest creature to enter the classroom. Names were tossed around - what should they call the new addition to the class? Whoa! Wait a minute! Mrs. Nichols had to put a stop to this dangerous idea right away. A classroom was NO place for a baby alligator!

Gator, Gator, Second Grader is a wonderful introduction to the world of classroom pets. With the teacher's help, students, and readers, learn about what makes a good pet, and why an alligator is NOT a good idea. Once Mrs. Nichols explains the concept, the students take turns listing an animal that would make a good pet, followed by an animal that should be left in the wild. At the end of the story are over ten pages of additional facts, from proper hand washing after handling an animal, information on gerbils and alligators, the often confused alligator vs. crocodile quandry, plus a curriculum and activity guide. Add in the fantastic illustrations and there's no doubt that this book should be in every classroom!

Quill says: Gator, gator, you belong in the wild, not in a second grade classroom! Read and learn all about various animals in this charming book about just what makes a good pet.

Jake, Minnie, Doc McStuffins, Sophia the First, and Mickey are just waiting for everyone to step on up and pay them a visit! Inside the pages of this book they’ll introduce you to all their pals, most of whom you probably are already very familiar with. Each and every page inside this book can be used as a poster and perhaps a reminder of just what they all do.

Doc is always on call, ready and waiting to help. Her job is “Prescribing hugs, cuddles, and smiles.” Everyone who is a Doc McStuffins fan knows she’s there when you need her, including Lambie, who enjoys a cuddle now and then. Awww, aren’t they so very cute together?

Look! There’s Jake in the crow’s nest checking out Captain Hook. Jake claims that “Friends work together and help each other.” I’d say that’s very true. Speaking of friends, there’s Minnie and Daisy who are “fashionista friends” who “have an eye for style.” Those bows certainly are quite flattering.

There are piles of colorful Disney characters in this book you’ll know. Say, isn’t that Goofy in that hot air balloon with Minnie and Mickey? Why yes, it is. Each page can be a poster or part of a collage on a wall. Of course this is a collectible and those folks won’t so much as pull out a single page. The high gloss pages pop with wall-to-wall images of many of our favorite Disney characters. This book is definitely a must have for all fans, especially those who need some ultra-friendly, playful wallpaper!

Kristoff, Queen Elsa, Princess Anna, and Olaf, wide-eyed characters from Disney’s animated feature movie Frozen are just waiting for us to open this book. It’s far from a chilly experience and in fact it’s a hot one! Each and every page can be used as a poster, but also a reminder of people, places, and things around Arendelle, “a magical land surrounded by deep fjords and tall mountains.” Of course if you are a fan, you already know that.

If you’ve watched Frozen a hundred times you won’t want to pass up a book like this one and probably already have it. If you’ve only seen the movie once, you’ll enjoy reading about your favs again. Elsa is "Beautiful! Powerful! / Dangerous! Cold! / Ice has a magic that can’t be controlled." Of course Anna is a charmer, ultra-sweet and “brave and bold.”

You can check out Kristoff too. Isn’t he handsome? Perhaps he’s your favorite character because he’s “courageous and sweet.” Add “brave, dependable, and hardworking” to that description and you have a charmer. Sven, Kristoff’s best friend can also be seen smiling at us in this book. Oh, and we can’t forget Olaf, a "sweet snowman with a big heart."

These aren’t the only characters you’ll see in this book, but if they were in Frozen they might just end up on your walls. Say, is that Pabbie? It is. Book Review - Persuasion, Captain Wentworth and Cracklin’ Cornbread

Persuasion, Captain Wentworth and Cracklin’ Cornbread (Jane Austen Takes the South)

Mary Jane Hathaway continues her ‘Jane Austen Takes the South series’ and pays homage to Persuasion in her current novel titled: Persuasion, Captain Wentworth and Cracklin’ Cornbread.

Lucy Crawford was born into a wealthy Southern family. Through the years, the Crawford family history achieved notable recognition as a solid mark in local circles. Growing up, Lucy experienced first-hand a life of privilege. After Lucy’s mother passed away, the grandeur and glory of the stately antebellum mansion assumed a similar decline as it fell into disrepair that was compounded by a mounting debt her father chose to ignore. It would seem the only remedy to climb out of the current situation would be to sell the mansion. That is until Lucy’s Aunt Olympia comes up with the brilliant notion of turning a portion of the mansion into a free clinic.

It’s difficult enough to struggle through the day-to-day battle of growing debt with little income to combat the mounting bills, but Lucy is willing to at least consider Aunt Olympia’s scheme. There is a kindness and generosity in Lucy’s soul that comes around to Aunt Olympia’s way of thinking. However, when she learns the clinic entails the return of her high school sweetheart, Jeremiah “Jem,” who just so happens to be one of the doctors to treat these less fortunate creatures, Lucy suddenly believes she was a bit too rash in agreeing to her Aunt’s terms. The thought of seeing Jem ten years after she broke his heart resurrects memories and feelings Lucy refused to let surface again. She struggles with her guilt and wonders how she could possibly face a man whose heart she had broken so long ago. Her decision hadn’t come easy. In truth, it was a decision that was made for her given the deeper loyalties she had for her family at the time. The heart knows what the heart wants and sometimes no matter how hard one tries to bury the feelings, the heart does persevere—whatever the outcome.

Mary Jane Hathaway solidifies her love and affection for the iconic Jane Austen once again in Persuasion, Captain Wentworth and Cracklin’ Cornbread. She takes the reader on a journey of a cat and mouse love story and channels the premise beautifully between her two main characters: Lucy and Jem. There is much to be said about the complexities of a love that is meant to be and whether it will survive the peaks and valleys true love demands. This is what Hathaway masters in this story. She knows how to get the story down on paper and convince the reader to maintain hope along the way. There are no elaborate pontifications in the dialogue, or tedious passages leading up to or affirming the conversations thereafter. Rather, there is a balanced flow throughout the reading journey. Hathaway applies tongue-in-cheek humor at the appropriate moments as much as she infuses heartfelt prose in others. This is a light and enjoyable read that captures the reader’s interest throughout.

Quill says: Persuasion, Captain Wentworth and Cracklin’ Cornbread is ‘comfort read’ as much as cornbread is ‘comfort food’!

Inmate 1818 and Other Stories by Bernard Otterman he release of Inmate 1818 and Other Stories, a collection of twelve short stories inspired by the Holocaust and its aftermath, marks a new milestone for a celebrated writer with unusual skill and vision. The stories of Bernard Otterman, a Holocaust survivor born in Lodz, Poland, are set in the ghettos and camps of World War II and in the difficult days following Hitler’s war against the Jews. The Shoah defines the lives of all characters in the stories—survivors as well as their children. In the title story, “Inmate 1818,” a young boy is smuggled into a labor camp and befriended by an eccentric teenager with a love for astronomy, who gives the boy a gift that saves his life. In “Golem of Auschwitz,” a survivor is haunted by the memory of the golem, a mythical creature drawn from Jewish folklore, that he and a Rabbi’s son created while in captivity. A German boy is determined to redeem his family’s Nazi sins by recreating the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp using plastic toy bricks in “Lego Lager.” In “Days of Rage,” married survivors are tormented when their son believes and spouts a neo-Nazi ideology. A survivor in “Lotto Fever” is both upset and obsessed by winning the lottery using numbers very similar to those tattooed on his arm. And in “Black Grass,” the author turns to the rich tradition of magical realism to respond to the phenomenon of the Holocaust, where the darkness born by this tragedy slowly envelops the world.

Herald of the Flame by Sylvia Engdahl Through a strange turn of fate Terry Steward, born Terry Radnor, was in the right place at the right time to save the secret colony Maclairn from terrorists who would have destroyed its plan to spread advanced mind powers to Earth and the other worlds of humankind. Now with his own starship Estel, he sets out to further that plan by journeying from world to world, heralding the hopeful future about which he alone knows the full truth. Yet he is all too aware that Maclairn’s enemies still pose a threat, and that on Earth the persecution of people who develop such powers is increasing. Soon targeted by bounty hunters, Terry can see no way to combat a planet-wide conspiracy—nor does he guess that if he lives long enough, he is destined for an even greater role in human history than he has played as a defender of Maclairn's cause. Saving Baby: How One Woman's Love for a Racehorse Led to Her Redemption by Jo Anne Normile Jo Anne Normile was not supposed to keep the foal, an exuberant Thoroughbred with only a few white hairs on his reddish-brown forehead. But she fell in love with the young horse, who had literally been born into her arms. The breeder finally said she could keep the colt, whom she nicknamed "Baby" – but only if she raced him. It was difficult to take Baby away from the safety of his pasture. But Normile had made a promise. Besides, horseracing had always come across as a glamorous blend of mint juleps and celebrity, of equine grace and speed. It was a vision she found appealing. And she fell hard for it, this "Sport of Kings." She experienced a thrill every time Baby sprinted around the track, edging out other horses. But the magic that enchants is a veneer. For every Seabiscuit, there are tens of thousands of racehorses whose lives end in pain and despair, with indifference and corruption that runs rampant through the world of horse racing. Normile knew none of this. Not until an accident on a poorly maintained track. That’s when everything changed. That’s when Normile founded the most successful horse rescue in the country, an organization that would go on to save more horses than anyone else ever had. That’s when she knew she had no other choice.
Gator, Gator, Second Grader by Conrad Storad Many creatures make great classroom pets, but others just DO NOT! That's what the teacher says, anyway! When second graders Benny and Jacob bring a baby alligator to school in a cardboard box, their teacher, Mrs. Nichols, has an important message to share. A baby gator is NOT a good classroom pet! she explains. As an impromptu pet safari unfolds, Mrs. Nichols helps her students identify which creatures are suitable for school and which animals are better housed elsewhere! Her last-minute lesson soon leads to an exuberant naming game, with students clamoring to compare turtles with Gila monsters, hamsters with grizzly bears, and much more. Following the story, a well-researched curriculum guide captivates young readers, helping them develop a deeper respect for nature. Narrated by a beloved classroom pet nicknamed Snoozer, Gator, Gator Second Grader cleverly draws young readers into the story from word one (Howdy!), making them feel like part of Mrs. Nichol's lively second grade classroom. As students compare and contrast a wide variety of animals, they quickly learn to recognize which creatures make good pets and which creatures do best in the zoo or in their natural habitats. The book's accompanying curriculum guide expertly introduces students to gerbils like Snoozer and provides an in-depth look at American alligators.

A Love Letter From God by P.K. Hallinan In this new title by P. K. Hallinan, the author supposes what God might say in a personal letter written to a child. The unconditional and unlimited nature of God's love is revealed through simple and lyrical language.
