Book Contest Rewards Excellence in Independent Publishing

The 4th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards (NIEA) announces a call for submissions.

The award program is coordinated by Beverly Hills, California based book shepherd Ellen Reid, who says "the goal is to recognize excellence in independent- and self-published books, a rapidly growing segment of a publishing industry that is going through constant growth and transformation."

Books published from 2007 to the present by self-published authors, small press, and independent publishers can be submitted for consideration in the categories of their choice.

Winners and Finalists will be announced nationally in mid May 2009.

All winners and finalists receive extensive media coverage and top award recipients are eligible to win prizes valued in excess of $12,000. These include sessions with outstanding media and PR consultants, marketing experts, and others in a position to assist authors and publishers in creating greater success with their books.

Last year's grand prize winner was the book Global Warming Is Good For Business, by Kimberley B. Keilbach.

For information about the contest including how to submit books, please visit www.indieexcellence.com. The deadline for entries is March 31, 2010.

"Awards that recognize excellence support more than sales for the independent and self-publishing authors and small presses who win them; they make our entire industry look good. The National Indie Excellence Awards does us all a great service." - Dan Poynter, author of The Self Publishing Manual and 100 other books

"I think contests - and awards - are great, especially for writers. I only won one in my life - but it changed the course of my life. When I was 21 I won a creative writing contest at college. Wow! I was a writer and never looked back." - Barnaby Conrad, Author of 30 books, including Matador, La Fiesta Brava, The Encyclopedia of Bullfighting, and How to Fight a Bull.

The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing

We've already run a few snippets from The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing, by Linda F. Radke.  We'll be running several more tips from this very useful book in the coming weeks.  If you're serious about self-publishing, pick up a copy of this book.  Below, please find a press release about the second edition.

VETERAN PUBLISHER SHARES TRADE SECRETS IN SECOND EDITION OF PUBLISHING, MARKETING MANUAL

CHANDLER, AZ (August 2009) – During a tough economy when traditional publishers are tightening their belts and accepting fewer authors, printing less books and spending less on promoting books they’ve already printed, a writer’s dream of becoming a published author doesn’t have to end––or even be put on hold.

Unpublished and published authors alike learn valuable tips to successfully and profitably self-publish and market books from the updated second edition of : How to Produce and Market Your Book on a Budget written by 24-year veteran publisher Linda F. Radke, owner of Five Star Publications, a producer of award-winning traditional-, partnership- and self-published books for all ages. Authors that follow Radke’s expert advice will get their work to readers faster, while maintaining creative control––and making more money!

“There used to be a taboo about self-published books, but not anymore,” says Radke. “I have personally consulted many authors on the path to publishing, getting their books into major bookstores and distributed by major distribution houses, as well as garnering them distinguished industry awards. The secret is in creating a quality product and knowing the ropes, which I reveal in detail in The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing.”

While Radke’s manual gives writers the nuts and bolts of publishing, such as copywriting, acquiring an ISBN, editing, typesetting, printing and distributing, etc., in an easy-to-digest manner, it doesn’t end there. Readers also receive an invaluable arsenal of conventional––and sometimes unconventional––methods for marketing, promoting and obtaining free publicity.

In addition to updating all information to remain current with the times and ever-changing publishing industry, the second edition of The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing includes brief articles from other traditionally and self-published authors, who share their candid experiences on the front lines of promoting books.

The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing (ISBN: 978-1-58985-101-6) retails for $19.95 and can be purchased in bookstores and through BarnesandNoble.com, Borders.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target.com, indiebound.org and FiveStarPublications.com. Visit www.FiveStarPublications.com for more info.

Lightning Source in Deal with CreateSpace

Reprinted with permission of Publishers Weekly.

Ingram and Amazon seemed to have buried their difference over a decision made in early 2008 by Amazon to make authors and publishers who want to sell their titles directly through Amazon use its print-on-demand division BookSurge (now being rebranded CreateSpace) rather than Ingram’s Lightning Source unit. This morning, CreateSpace announced that self-published authors and others who sign up for the CreateSpace Pro Plan will get access to Lightning and Ingram’s distribution channels. The demand the by Amazon made in spring 2008 that customers who want to sell directly on the Amazon cite use BookSurge touched off a nasty dispute between Amazon and Ingram and prompted a lawsuit by a BookLocker, another print-on-demand company that challenged the legality of Amazon’s decision. A motion by Amazon to dismiss that suit was recently denied.

Details of how the deal between Lightning and CreateSpace will work were unavailable at press time. "With Lightning Source and Ingram, our members can make their titles available to the larger book marketplace," said Dana LoPiccolo-Giles, managing director of CreateSpace. Phil Ollila, chief content officer, Ingram Content Group, commented: “Our new relationship with CreateSpace is a continuation of Ingram’s long-term strategy to offer the broadest selection of books to our customers worldwide.”

New Site for Authors - The Author's Inn

The Author's Inn is a website dedicated to showcasing any and all writers of serious novels, poetry and articles and giving them the introduction to the reading public they deserve at a very affordable, one-time, life-time cost and to giving readers access to those writers and their works.

For that one-time, life-time price, an author gets a page for their personal picture and bio and their book cover and synopsis. Multiple books are more than welcome. They are also listed in the indices of authors, books and genres, and their book cover is displayed in The Gallery of Books 24/7/365. Any time anyone clicks into the Gallery, the author’s book covers are on display.

The sole purpose of The Author’s Inn is to give authors the exposure they deserve for their works at a price they can afford. And, as you know, exposure is the name of the game in the book publishing and marketing business.

There are also pages for News From Our Authors, a Blog (Wanna Talk? Blog) where we can all express our ideas about writing and the industry, plus many pages of information on the subject of writing how-tos, how to market our books and so on.

Feel free to jump over to The Author’s Inn (http://www.the-authors-inn.com), look at the content and the exposure the authors are getting, then sign up for your own page and tell a friend.
