In St. Izzy of F Street by Robb Grindstaff, a Washington, DC journalist named Sonny Mann keeps seeing this homeless woman near his workplace, who always carries an “End is Near” sign. When his newspaper asks its journalists to come up with article ideas and submit them, Sonny comes up with the idea of exploring how homelessness impacts smaller communities across America.

Sonny never thinks his topic will be chosen. When it is, he begins his search of that same homeless woman, named Izzy, who keeps moving around. When he finally locates her again, he approaches her and strikes up a conversation asking for further details of what she means by her “End Is Near” sign. Never does he imagine that what Izzy explains will start coming true in near future prophecies. Is Izzy simply delusional or could she be the next modern prophet?

The first thing that stood out to this reviewer was just how believable the setting, characters, and storyline were for this novel. The book was set in a normal American working city, specifically Washington, DC, and was totally relatable to any reader. Sonny, being a character that was hard working and trying to write the next big article in order to earn some recognition, also made you feel for him knowing how hard it is for journalists to write winning pieces in their career. As the reader, you want him to find the information he is searching for and in turn, allow him to gain recognition for his article. Izzy, although eccentric at times, was also totally believable and relatable. They were total opposites of each other and worked well with one another. As for the storyline, it, too, pulled readers in and allowed them to feel that this situation could truly happen in everyday life.

The prophecies that Izzy foretold were not direct or clear, which led to readers needing to sit with them a bit and mull them over in order to meaningfully interpret them. It was fascinating to watch her freely state things at random, and then in turn witness the prophecies coming to fruition. As the reader, this led to a genuine urge to find out how the story would unfold as it progressed. This narrative was one of the most captivating that I have read!
