In The Stolen Heart of the Cape Cod Bay by J.B. Auchter, Inspector Jack Post, a well-known detective in the greater Boston area, cracks cases that others can’t. His skills are so sharp that he has been hired by other states to help them close cases that have gone unsolved. He has a very unique approach to working his cases – he gets his wife and kids involved because different perspectives help Jack see things others may not. No matter his strategy, Jack is the detective you want to help you get to the bottom of difficult unsolved cases.
Jack and his family are invited to a private and very exclusive gala in Cape Cod, to celebrate the unveiling of a beautiful and very expensive piece of pirate treasure once owned by infamous Captain Black Sam Bellamy. Jack is to not only secure the well-being of all the guests, but also ensure The Heart of the Cape Cod Bay piece remains protected for the evening. This piece has huge significance because it is a stunning and quite rare heart made from black pearls, the rarest color pearl, and is worth fifteen million dollars. When an unforeseen storm knocks out power to the Cape Cod area, the unthinkable occurs. The Heart is stolen and Jack and his family must find out who the thief is before they leave the gala’s property. What clues do Jack and his family find to help solve the case? Who could the thief be?
This reviewer absolutely loved this story! It was packed with so many rich details of pirate treasure and past local history that readers will believe they are helping solve the case right along with Jack and his family. Readers learn who Captain Black Sam Bellamy was and how he came to own this magnificent black pearl heart piece in the first place. Auchter created an entertaining storyline that pulls readers in from the first page and takes them on a roller coaster ride of events until the very last page.
The author wove a detailed storyline throughout the pages and put interesting and unique characters in just the right places to carry the story along. One thing to make note of with this story was that it was written for 8-13 year olds, so adding Jack’s children, Avery and Luke, to assist their father in cracking this case was ingenious. It was a joy to see their younger minds adding different and unique perspectives to things that the adult characters weren’t originally seeing themselves.
This story had plenty of intrigue because, along the way, readers are learning of pirate history and just how The Heart of the Cape Cod Bay came into existence. There was plenty of mystery as readers wonder who would have gone to such measures to steal The Heart right in front of all the gala attendees.
Quill says: If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining story in which you feel as if you’ve become another character seeing everything playing out before your eyes, then look no further. Well done, Mr. Auchter!
