Nope, there’s no way he’d want one of those guinea pigs. His sister smiled as she cuddled with hers and talked to it. Not cool. Not fun. Guinea pigs are “really boring ... nowhere near as cool as other pets you can get.” Of course a big old dog would be a lot of fun. His tongue would hang out and he’d slobber all over the place. If you threw a ball at the beach he’d splash around trying to get it and then you could “snooze together on the sand.” Zzzzzzz! His sister said they were kind of messy, but guinea pigs were neat and clean. Not cool. Not fun.

They all sat watching a bear on television, including that messy neat and clean guinea pig. Ah, of course the “perfect pet” was a “huge shaggy brown bear!” Cool and fun because a boy could ride on its back and “watch the sun go down from his mountain cave.” Sister claimed that you couldn’t put one in her bed, but that a little “cuddly guinea pig” was just the thing. Not cool. Not fun. When he really thought about it, the perfect pet would be a “huge smoking dragon” that would even have wings and horns and fire from his nose!” Cool and fun, but what would his sister say?

This is a humorous and charming story about a little boy and his “perfect” pet.” Of course his sister had that little guinea pig and nothing would budge her from thinking that it wasn’t perfect. Naturally, a critter who is small and not very exciting is far from cool and fun. The little boy’s imagination goes wild as he pictures all kinds of pets that would be perfect and not a one of them was called a guinea pig. His sister thinks that he “should give her guinea pig a try,” but he’s not so sure. The artwork is colorful, vibrant, and captures a little boy’s imagination perfectly as we see some most unusual choices for the perfect pet emerge from the pages.

Quill says: If you have a little one who thinks a hulking gorilla or a rhino would make a perfect pet, you might just love this book!
