In an alternate Los Angeles, it seems everyone is walking a fine line of either superhero or villain in Super Science Vol. 2 by N. Alessandro K.

The new Super Science Division of LAPD is still being run by Sergeant Esmeralda Villanueva and her partner, Jack Mantle. The only people profiting from the hard work of the Super Science Division are the corrupt elites and scientists. Can Esmeralda and Jack gain any sense of order in all the chaos that surrounds them?

This volume picks up where the previous one ended. There is still chaos in Los Angeles after the skies turned purple and the residents started morphing into crazy maniacs out to profit only for themselves. The characters were plentiful throughout the story, and honestly, it was a bit difficult to keep track of all of them, especially considering many were not accompanied by a background story.

As far as characters go, I did love Gas Giant because he was considered Los Angeles’ real-life superhero and would stop at nothing to protect people. He was unique because he morphed into a superhuman after he was part of an experiment where he ate irradiated food and survived while almost all others perished. He grew super strong and set out to protect the people of Los Angeles no matter how he had to do it. It was refreshing to see one human that had the people’s best interest in mind compared to the villains who were out to only gain for themselves.

It is worth mentioning that this novel is not intended for younger teens, as it depicts drug use in both the story and within the illustrations. Also, I would recommend to readers that they read the first volume to understand the backstory of this novel before diving into volume two.

The illustrations provided by M.K. Perker were detailed and matched the written story being told. He is extremely talented with his style of illustrating, and it fits the story very well. His work has appeared in newspapers and magazines. He has co-created, illustrated, and written works for various companies throughout the years.

Author N. Alessandro K. has worked as a producer and screenwriter since 2004. He also works as a commercial and fine arts photographer.
