From mystery author Kevin G. Chapman comes his newest release, The Other Murder. This thriller follows the investigation of two seemingly unrelated murders on opposite sides of the same New York park on the same night. As the press reports disturbing facts regarding the murders, it becomes clear that the two murders may be more connected than previously assumed.
Hannah Hawthorne is a cable news producer who has been given the chance to cover the murder of a pretty, young NYU student. The story quickly takes off, prompting vigils and ratings that she has not had in quite some time. At the same time, Paulo Richardson, a reporter for a small newspaper, is covering the murder on the other side of the park—that of a Latino teen boy. As Hannah and Paulo investigate, they keep running into each other and finally decide to work together to share information about the respective murders. Once they team up, they begin uncovering alarming facts that mainstream media has been trying to keep quiet, and they decide to take matters into their own hands.
Hannah and Paulo arrange a meeting with a witness to the murders, who gives them his testimony, asking in exchange for immunity. They tell their witness they will do what they can, but it further complicates matters given the fact that he is a drug dealer. Hannah and Paulo believe that their witness is telling the truth and is truly scared of the killer, but whether or not he will be granted immunity is out of their hands. The situation becomes even more complex when the suspected killer shoots his way out of an ambulance that was transporting him, leading to a city-wide manhunt for him. During all of this, Hannah and Paulo continue to be determined to uncover the truth and bring the true killer to justice, no matter how dangerous the circumstances...
Chapman is no stranger to writing thrilling fiction, and with The Other Murder, he once again knocks it out of the park. This story begins with a whodunit that the reader will be trying to solve until the very end, complete with characters who are easily relatable. The justice seekers, Hannah and Paulo, will be loved by readers, while the bad guys are developed so thoroughly that readers will love to hate them.
In a story such as this, it can be easy for the progression to lag, but Chapman keeps the excitement coming at a brisk pace throughout. There were no parts of the story that seemed superfluous or unnecessary, and the same can be said about the characters. The author did a superb job of developing all the essential players, yet not including any unnecessarily, which can often lead to confusion in novels.
Quill says: Chapman has achieved another thrilling success with The Other Murder, a story complete with a race to discover the truth, several modern-day heroes, and numerous unsavory people who are not always what they seem.
