A dedicated and hardworking girl propels In The Garden With Flori, a lush and quietly powerful picture book and the newest offering from author/illustrator Sonja Danowski.
In The Garden with Flori is an imaginative light read about Linn, a young girl, who has always loved gardening. When her grandfather is hospitalized due to a broken leg, she happily agrees to tend to her grandpa's greenhouse while he is away.
With her faithful but playful dog Flori following her around, she sets to water the vegetables and flowers. One day, after a heavy downpour, the plants are destroyed by an unlikely guest and little Linn has to figure out how to share the bad news with her grandpa once he comes home while attempting to salvage what is left of the greenhouse. The book ends with an educative piece on one of nature's most common fauna.
In The Garden with Flori is a beautiful story that will sweep a young reader's heart and mind. Lily is a likable character and her dedication to helping out with the gardening is endearing. With passion and purpose, Danowski creates an embodiment of ethics and values that children should be instilled with at an early age.
Further, the language is accessible and easy for young minds to grasp. The bold and beautiful illustrations carry a unique color theme that melds with the plot. The plot is morally nutritive and explores themes such as patience, love, collaboration and responsibility.
Quill says: What makes up a good children's story is the quality of the illustrations, an easy story to grasp, and if the story has a general appeal for children of all walks of life. This charming children's book certainly fits the bill and is a beautiful addition to its genre!
