Award-winning Authors....

Award-winning Authors Visit, Donate Books to Phoenix Children's Hospital's 1 Darn Cool School

CHANDLER, AZ (March 4, 2010) – When sick children require extended stays at Phoenix Children's Hospital, they don't miss out on schoolwork thanks to 1 Darn Cool School, the hospital's in-house school. And, thanks to Five Star Publications, they don't miss out on fun school events either, like storytelling and visits from distinguished authors. From March 15 through March 29, Five Star Publications' most popular children's authors will visit 1 Darn Cool School, donating autographed copies of their books to the school's library and classrooms, giving book presentations and storytelling.

The excitement begins with a visit from Conrad Storad on March 15. With the assistance of a giant-sized diamondback rattler puppet, Arizona’s most popular, multi award-winning children’s book author and writer of more than 30 science and nature books for young readers, will perform an animated reading of his latest title, Rattlesnake Rules. Storad also authored the wildly popular Don’t Call Me Pig, selected for the Governor's Book Project, which provided 93,000 first-graders with a free copy of his book.

Additional Five Star visitors include Anni Beach, who will touch on her late husband's award-winning book, Don't Throw Away Your Stick Till You Cross the River; talk about writing; and discuss the couple's project, the Jam Pak Blues 'N' Grass Neighborhood Band, dedicated to helping youths through teaching them to play bluegrass music and perform. Tom Lambke, coauthor of I Just Am: a Story of Down Syndrome Awareness and Tolerance with his son Brian Lambke, will tell the true story of how Bryan lives with Down Syndrome and how he believes others perceive him. And, Dany Pierard-Deviche introduces students to Skiff, the loveable, adventurous Sheltie who stars in her Little Skiff book series.

Authors who had prior engagements and could not make the Five Star engagement, but will still donate autographed copies of their books to 1 Darn Cool School are: Michael Moorehead, celebrated for having his multiple award-winning book, The Student From Zombie Island: Conquering the Rumor Monster, published when he was only 11; Lynnette A. Murray-Gibson, who won first place in the children's book category at the 2009 Hollywood Book Festival and third place in the Arizona Author Association Literary Contest for Clara Meets Mr. Twiddles: The Magical Adventures of Clara the Cleaning Lady, the delightful story of a cleaning lady with special powers and her friend, a cranky, territorial cat; James Weinsier, triple award-winner for Where Do We Go? The Good Grief Book, which explores the theme of death in a child-friendly fashion; Mila Bernadkin, author of the award-winning, inspirational novel Attitude Girl, a coming-of-age story that follows an outspoken, materialistic teenager on the rocky road to adulthood; Dylan Peters, another published child author, who wrote Tic Talk: Living with Tourette Syndrome, a 9-year-old boy’s story in his own words; and Shari Cohen, who is donating a stuffed beagle toy in addition to Alfie's Bark Mitzvah, a picture book about the Jewish ritual celebration of becoming an adult – only told from a puppy's point of view.
